Did you know that some types of old wallpaper may contain asbestos?
It often comes as a shock, as most people are unaware of just how many building materials have asbestos fibres mixed in during the manufacturing process. In fact, around 4,000 different products contain asbestos of one type or another, and these are still causing problems today - Asbestos-related illnesses result in around 5,000 deaths annually in the UK alone.
At Asbestos SOS, our mission is to raise awareness and carry out asbestos wallpaper removal in Fence Houses wherever possible to create a safer environment.
With this in mind, here's an important fact that you need to know: if your wallpaper dates from between 1930 and 1980, there's a high probability that it will contain asbestos. Do not be influenced by well-meaning but misinformed 'experts' on online forums who tell you otherwise: they are wrong.
Even if your wallpaper is safe, there's a fair chance that the paste is not! Asbestos is commonly found in the paste as it was added to help with adhesion, strength, fire retardancy and heat resistance. It was also cheaply available!
Again, you should be perfectly safe if your old wallpaper (and the paste) was bought after the year 2000.
This is something to keep in mind before stripping wallpaper in an older property, as you may release harmful fibres into the house.
You can, but with extreme caution because of the relative dangers involved. Any possible asbestos within the paper, wall lining or paste could become disturbed, and once the particles become airborne they can be inhaled, resulting in conditions like asbestosis, mesothelioma and certain types of cancer.
The best way to deal with this problem is to allow Asbestos SOS in Fence Houses to handle it for you!
